Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or almond flour for gluten-free)
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • Cooking spray or a light drizzle of oil
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice (about 1 large orange)
  • 3 tbsp honey (or maple syrup)
  • 2 tbsp sriracha sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tsp water
  • Thinly sliced green onions (optional garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (optional garnish)
  • Extra orange zest (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Pat chicken pieces dry with paper towels and cut into 1-inch cubes. Place chicken in a bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and orange zest. Stir until well mixed.
  3. Beat egg in a shallow bowl. Dip each chicken piece in the egg, then coat in the flour-cornstarch mixture. Press gently so the coating sticks. Repeat until all chicken is coated.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 400°F for 3-5 minutes.
  5. Lightly spray air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange chicken bites in a single layer, leaving space between pieces.
  6. Cook chicken at 400°F for 8 minutes. Flip each piece, spray lightly again, and cook for another 5-7 minutes until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F).
  7. While chicken cooks, whisk together orange juice, honey, sriracha, soy sauce, and rice vinegar in a small saucepan. Heat over medium until bubbling. Stir in cornstarch-water mixture. Cook 2-3 minutes, whisking constantly, until glaze thickens and turns glossy. Remove from heat.
  8. Transfer cooked chicken bites to a mixing bowl. Pour warm honey sriracha glaze over and toss until evenly coated.
  9. Garnish with green onions, sesame seeds, and extra orange zest. Serve immediately.

Notes

For gluten-free, use almond flour and tamari. For vegetarian, swap chicken for firm tofu. Toss chicken in glaze just before serving for best crispiness. Double the glaze for dipping. If you don’t have sriracha, use chili garlic sauce or hot sauce. Don’t crowd the air fryer basket for optimal crispiness.
