Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream, full-fat
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup chunky salsa
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced black olives
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • 1/2 cup diced red bell peppers
  • 1/2 cup sliced cherry tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsley (optional)
  • Assorted tortilla chips, pita chips, or fresh veggie sticks (carrots, celery, cucumber) for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the base layer: In a large mixing bowl, beat 8 oz softened cream cheese with 1 cup sour cream until smooth and creamy (2-3 minutes with electric mixer or 5 minutes by hand). Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, salt, and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Mix well until thick but spreadable.
  2. Mix the salsa layer: In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup chunky salsa with 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice. Stir gently and set aside.
  3. Assemble the first two layers: Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly across the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish. Smooth it out with a spatula. Carefully spoon the salsa mixture over the cream cheese layer, spreading gently to keep layers distinct.
  4. Add the shredded cheese: Sprinkle 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar and 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese evenly over the salsa layer.
  5. Create the basketball court design: Use diced black olives to outline court markings such as free throw lanes and hoop circles. Arrange chopped green onions along the sidelines to mimic boundary lines. Scatter diced red bell peppers and cherry tomatoes for color. Optionally, sprinkle chopped cilantro or parsley for a fresh green pop.
  6. Chill before serving: Cover the platter with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld and cheese set slightly.
  7. Serve with chips and veggies: Arrange assorted tortilla chips, pita chips, and fresh veggie sticks around the platter. Optionally, sprinkle extra green onions or olives on top.

Notes

Soften cream cheese before mixing for smooth texture. Chill dip for at least 30 minutes to firm layers and enhance flavor. Use chunky salsa for texture contrast. For gluten-free, use certified gluten-free chips. For vegan option, substitute dairy ingredients with plant-based alternatives. Avoid mixing layers too much to keep design distinct.
