A rich and velvety hot chocolate with a red velvet twist, combining cocoa powder and red velvet cake mix for a cozy winter drink that’s quick and easy to make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup red velvet cake mix
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 cups milk (whole milk preferred; almond or oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened (optional but recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together red velvet cake mix, cocoa powder, and granulated sugar to prevent lumps.
  2. Slowly pour in milk and heavy cream while whisking constantly to blend smoothly.
  3. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, until hot but not boiling, about 5-7 minutes, until slightly thickened and velvety.
  4. Add softened cream cheese and vanilla extract, whisking until cream cheese is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  5. Stir in a pinch of salt to balance sweetness and enhance flavor.
  6. Taste and adjust sweetness by adding more sugar if desired; add a splash more milk if too thick.
  7. Pour into mugs, top with whipped cream and optional cocoa powder or red sprinkles, and serve warm immediately.

Notes

Use moderate heat to avoid scorching the milk. Soften cream cheese before adding to prevent lumps. For a frothier texture, use an immersion blender after adding cream cheese. Adjust sweetness and thickness to taste. Dairy-free and gluten-free substitutions are possible.
