A quick and easy holiday treat combining buttery caramel, salty crackers, and melted chocolate for a perfect sweet and salty crunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • About 40 whole saltine crackers (1 sleeve), arranged in a single layer
  • 1 cup (2 sticks, 227 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (220 g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 cups (340 g) semisweet chocolate chips
  • A pinch of flaky sea salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet, covering the entire surface.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt 1 cup (227 g) of unsalted butter over medium heat.
  4. Add 1 cup (220 g) of packed light brown sugar to the melted butter. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil.
  5. Let the mixture boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
  6. Immediately pour the hot toffee evenly over the arranged saltines, spreading quickly with a spatula.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for exactly 5 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and sprinkle 2 cups (340 g) of semisweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let sit for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  9. Use a spatula to gently spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee and crackers.
  10. Optionally, sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt on top.
  11. Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature for 1-2 hours until chocolate is set and firm.
  12. Once set, break into pieces and serve or store in an airtight container.

Notes

Use fresh saltine crackers for best crispiness. Boil the butter and brown sugar mixture for exactly 3 minutes to ensure proper toffee consistency. Spread the toffee quickly and evenly to avoid sogginess. Let the toffee cool at room temperature to maintain crunch; avoid refrigeration to prevent moisture softening the texture. For dairy-free, use vegan butter and dairy-free chocolate chips. Optional toppings include chopped nuts or crushed peppermint candies.
