These crispy wonton mozzarella sticks feature a crunchy, golden wonton wrapper with a gooey, melty cheese center. They are quick, easy, and perfect for snacks or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Wonton wrappers
  • Mozzarella cheese sticks (string cheese), cut in half
  • All-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Vegetable oil (peanut or canola oil recommended) for frying
  • Italian seasoning (optional)
  • Salt and pepper
  • Marinara sauce (optional, for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Lay out wonton wrappers on a clean surface. Cut mozzarella sticks in half to about 2 inches (5 cm) each.
  2. Beat 1 large egg with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of water to make egg wash; set aside.
  3. Lightly dust both sides of each wonton wrapper with all-purpose flour.
  4. Place a piece of mozzarella stick in the center of each wrapper. Optionally sprinkle Italian seasoning or crushed red pepper flakes on the cheese.
  5. Brush the edges of the wrapper with egg wash, fold into a triangle or rectangle, and press firmly to seal tightly, removing any air bubbles.
  6. Place wrapped sticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to about 2 inches (5 cm) deep over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the wonton sticks in batches for 2-3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove sticks with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve warm with marinara sauce, ranch, or your favorite dip.

Notes

Ensure edges are sealed well with egg wash and chill wrapped sticks before frying to prevent cheese leakage. Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature and crispiness. Baking alternative: brush with oil and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway.
