Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (95g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1/3 cup (35g) unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Pinch of instant espresso powder (optional)
  • 8 ounces (227g) high-quality semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon (14g) butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon liqueur like Grand Marnier or Bailey’s (optional)
  • Fresh strawberries, halved (for dipping)
  • Marshmallows (for dipping)
  • Banana slices (for dipping)
  • Mini pretzels (for dipping)
  • Heart-shaped sprinkles or edible glitter (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and lightly flour an 8-inch heart-shaped brownie pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk melted butter and granulated sugar until combined and slightly glossy. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each. Stir in vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, salt, and instant espresso powder if using.
  4. Gradually fold dry ingredients into wet mixture with a spatula until just combined; do not overmix. Batter should be thick and fudgy.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pan and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Check at 25 minutes with a toothpick; it should come out with moist crumbs but no wet batter.
  7. Cool brownies completely in the pan on a cooling rack before unmolding.
  8. While brownies cool, chop chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl. Heat heavy cream in a saucepan over medium heat until just simmering.
  9. Pour hot cream over chocolate; let sit 2 minutes, then stir until smooth. Stir in softened butter and optional liqueur. Keep warm in a fondue pot or slow cooker.
  10. Remove cooled brownies from pan. Cut into bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife or heart-shaped cookie cutter.
  11. Arrange brownie bites on a serving platter around the fondue bowl. Add strawberries, marshmallows, banana slices, and pretzels.
  12. Serve warm and enjoy. Reheat fondue gently if it cools too much.

Notes

Do not overmix the batter to keep brownies fudgy. Start checking brownies at 25 minutes to avoid overbaking. Use good-quality chocolate for smooth fondue. Keep fondue warm but not hot to prevent burning. Cool brownies completely before cutting to maintain shape. Add a tablespoon of milk if batter is too thick. Leftover brownies keep 3 days at room temperature; fondue keeps 5 days refrigerated.
