These red velvet crinkle cookies combine rich cocoa flavor with a soft, chewy texture and a signature powdered sugar crackle, perfect for holiday treats and gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¼ cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 to 1 ½ teaspoons red food coloring
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
  • Powdered sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Gather all ingredients and measure them out. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened unsalted butter with granulated sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined. Then mix in softened cream cheese and red food coloring until the batter is a vibrant red.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed just until combined. Avoid overmixing; the dough should be thick and sticky.
  6. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight.
  7. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll each into a ball. Generously roll each ball in powdered sugar until fully coated.
  8. Place the coated dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes until edges are set but centers remain soft.
  9. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Chilling the dough for at least 1 hour is essential for the perfect texture and crinkle effect. Use room temperature eggs for smooth incorporation. Roll dough balls generously in powdered sugar to achieve signature crinkles. If cookies spread too much, chill dough longer or reduce butter slightly.
