A quick and flavorful grilled asparagus recipe with lemon that’s perfect for summer BBQs. The smoky char and bright citrus zing make this veggie side a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh asparagus, preferably medium-thick stalks
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (from 1 medium lemon)
  • Lemon zest from 1 medium lemon
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (flaky salt like Maldon recommended)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F).
  2. Trim the woody ends of the asparagus, about 1 to 2 inches from the bottom.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic powder, sea salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
  4. Place the asparagus in a shallow dish or large bowl and drizzle the marinade over. Toss gently to coat every spear and let sit for 5 minutes.
  5. Lay the asparagus spears perpendicular to the grill grates and grill for 3 to 5 minutes per side, turning carefully with tongs until tender-crisp with some charred spots.
  6. Check doneness: asparagus should be bright green with a slight smoky aroma. Avoid overcooking to prevent limpness.
  7. Transfer to a serving platter and drizzle any leftover marinade on top. Optionally sprinkle flaky sea salt before serving.

Notes

If you don’t have a grill, use a grill pan or cast iron skillet preheated well to get grill marks. Use tongs to avoid breaking asparagus. For a dairy twist, sprinkle grated Parmesan after grilling. Marinate up to an hour ahead for deeper flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat gently.
