Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 mix for juicy burgers)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Soft burger buns or brioche buns, sliced
  • Optional: lettuce leaves for low-carb wraps
  • Cheddar cheese slices
  • Swiss cheese slices
  • Blue cheese crumbles
  • Caramelized onions (2 large onions, slow-cooked)
  • Fresh tomato slices
  • Crispy bacon strips
  • Pickles (dill or bread-and-butter)
  • Avocado slices or guacamole
  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Jalapeño slices
  • Leafy greens (romaine or baby spinach)
  • Red onion rings
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • Mayonnaise or garlic aioli
  • BBQ sauce
  • Sriracha or hot sauce

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and divide into 4-6 equal portions. Shape into patties about ¾ inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center with your thumb. (10 minutes)
  2. Slice onions thinly. Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally and cook for 25-30 minutes until golden and sweet. (30 minutes, can be started ahead)
  3. Preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese slices during the last minute to melt. (10-12 minutes)
  4. While patties cook, slice tomatoes, red onions, and avocados. Crisp bacon strips in a pan or oven. Warm sautéed mushrooms if using. Arrange all toppings in separate bowls or platters. (10-15 minutes)
  5. Lightly butter the insides of buns and toast on grill or skillet for 1-2 minutes until golden and slightly crispy. (5 minutes)
  6. Set up the burger bar with buns, patties, toppings, and sauces buffet-style. Encourage customization. (5 minutes)

Notes

Do not overwork the meat when forming patties to avoid toughness. Make a small dimple in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking. Let patties rest 3-5 minutes after cooking to retain juices. Toast buns just before serving to keep them crisp. Caramelize onions slowly over low heat for best flavor. Use a digital thermometer to ensure ground beef reaches 160°F (71°C) for safety.
