Ingredients

Scale
  • 810 hot dogs or sausages (beef, pork, chicken, or veggie)
  • 810 hot dog buns (soft but sturdy)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for toasting buns)
  • Yellow mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Diced onions (raw or caramelized)
  • Sauerkraut
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Coleslaw (creamy or vinegar-based)
  • Avocado slices
  • Bacon bits (optional)
  • BBQ sauce (optional)
  • Hot sauce (optional, e.g., Sriracha or Frank’s)
  • Fresh herbs (optional, chopped cilantro or parsley)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F).
  2. If using frozen hot dogs, thaw completely. Lightly score the hot dogs diagonally with a knife to prevent curling and help even cooking.
  3. Spread softened unsalted butter evenly on the inside of each hot dog bun.
  4. Place the hot dogs on the grill perpendicular to the grates and grill for about 5-7 minutes, turning every 2 minutes until nicely charred but not blackened.
  5. Toast the buttered buns cut side down on the cooler side of the grill for 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted and golden.
  6. Prepare toppings by dicing onions, slicing avocado, shredding cheese, and arranging all toppings in small bowls for easy access.
  7. Place grilled hot dogs into toasted buns and let everyone customize their own hot dog with the toppings.

Notes

Keep a spray bottle of water nearby to control flare-ups. Score hot dogs to prevent curling. Butter buns just before toasting to avoid sogginess. Prepare toppings ahead but slice avocado shortly before serving to prevent browning. For indoor cooking, use a grill pan or cast-iron skillet.
