This French Onion Beef Casserole is comfort food at its finest—rich, cheesy, and packed with flavor. Perfect for family dinners or hosting friends, this dish is a hearty twist on classic French onion soup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (lean)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (Gruyère or mozzarella)
  • 8 ounces egg noodles, cooked and drained
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the egg noodles according to package instructions, drain, and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and fragrant (about 15-20 minutes). Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the ground beef and cook over medium heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess grease.
  4. Add the caramelized onions back to the skillet with the beef. Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Lower the heat and stir in the heavy cream. Cook for 2-3 minutes, letting the sauce thicken slightly.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a casserole dish, layer the cooked noodles, beef-onion mixture, and shredded cheese.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 10 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  8. Let the casserole cool slightly before serving.

Notes

[‘Caramelizing the onions slowly is key to achieving deep flavor.’, ‘Taste and adjust salt and pepper at every step.’, ‘Use freshly grated cheese for better melting and flavor.’, ‘You can assemble the casserole ahead of time and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.’, ‘A heavy skillet helps with even cooking and prevents burning the onions.’]
