This French Onion Chicken recipe combines the rich, caramelized flavors of classic French onion soup with tender, juicy chicken breasts, all cooked effortlessly in the slow cooker and topped with melty cheese. It’s the ultimate comfort food for busy weeknights or cozy Sunday dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 2 lbs)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional, for browning)
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 56 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, helps caramelize onions)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 tablespoon fresh, chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth (or chicken broth)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, or gluten-free flour/cornstarch)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss, or mozzarella)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Pat chicken breasts dry and season both sides with salt and black pepper.
  2. Optional: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear chicken for 2-3 minutes per side until lightly golden. (Skip if short on time.)
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions, sprinkle with sugar and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes until onions start to soften.
  4. Stir in garlic and thyme, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Transfer half the onions to the bottom of the slow cooker. Arrange chicken breasts on top. Pile remaining onions over the chicken.
  6. In a measuring cup, whisk together beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, and flour (if using). Pour evenly over onions and chicken.
  7. Cover and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours, until chicken is very tender and onions are meltingly soft.
  8. About 15 minutes before serving, sprinkle shredded cheese over each chicken breast. Cover and let cheese melt.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve hot with extra sauce and onions spooned over the top.

Notes

For best flavor, use Gruyère cheese and thinly slice the onions. Browning the chicken and onions before slow cooking adds extra depth, but you can skip this step for convenience. To thicken the sauce, use flour or cornstarch. For gluten-free, use gluten-free flour or cornstarch and check your Worcestershire sauce. Leftovers taste even better the next day and freeze well for up to 2 months.
