A naturally hydrating and refreshing drink made with fresh watermelon, mint, lime juice, and water. Perfect for hot days and simple to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups watermelon cubes, seeds removed
  • 1012 fresh mint leaves, gently bruised
  • Juice of 1 lime (about 1 tablespoon or 15 ml)
  • 2 cups cold water (500 ml)
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • Pinch of sea salt (optional)
  • Sparkling water (optional, to replace some or all cold water)

Instructions

  1. Cut about 4 cups (about 600 grams) of watermelon into cubes, removing any seeds if needed.
  2. Gently bruise 10-12 fresh mint leaves with your fingers or the back of a spoon to release their oils and aroma.
  3. In a blender, combine the watermelon cubes, bruised mint leaves, juice of 1 fresh lime, and 2 cups of cold water. Blend on high until smooth, about 30-45 seconds.
  4. Optional: Pour the blended liquid through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher, pressing the pulp to extract as much juice as possible.
  5. Taste and adjust flavor by adding a pinch of sea salt if desired, or more cold water if too thick. Stir well.
  6. Add plenty of ice cubes to the pitcher or glasses. Pour the agua fresca over the ice and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint or a small watermelon wedge.
  7. Serve immediately or chill in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours.

Notes

Use ripe, fragrant watermelon for best flavor. Bruise mint leaves gently to avoid bitterness. Straining is optional but recommended for a smooth texture. Frozen watermelon cubes can replace ice for a slushy texture without watering down the drink. Best consumed fresh within 24 hours.
