Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: sliced green onions or fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks (about 5-7 minutes).
  3. Drain any excess grease and return the beef to the skillet.
  4. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables soften and become fragrant.
  5. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, smoked paprika, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well and simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the mixture thickens slightly.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine softened cream cheese and half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  7. Transfer the sloppy joe mixture to an oven-safe baking dish. Dollop the cream cheese mixture over the top, then spread it evenly across the surface.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  9. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with sliced green onions or parsley, if desired.
  11. Serve immediately with tortilla chips, toasted baguette slices, or sturdy crackers.
