A cozy fall dessert featuring tender baked apples filled with buttery cinnamon-sugar and topped with caramel sauce. Perfect for gatherings or a sweet treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 firm, crisp apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • Caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup pecan pieces (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Wash and dry the apples. Remove the core using an apple corer or paring knife, leaving the bottom intact.
  3. Make vertical slices down the apple about 1/4-inch apart, leaving the bottom intact to keep the apple together.
  4. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Stir in 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  5. Spoon the filling into the core of each apple and use a basting brush to spread it over the top and into the blooming slices.
  6. Sprinkle chopped pecans over the top of the apples (optional).
  7. Place the apples in a baking dish and cover loosely with aluminum foil. Bake for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the apples are tender and caramelized.
  8. Drizzle warm caramel sauce over the baked apples.
  9. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Notes

[‘Choose firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for the best results.’, ‘Be careful not to slice through the bottom of the apple while making the blooming slices.’, ‘Cover the apples with foil initially to prevent over-browning.’, ‘Add a pinch of sea salt to the caramel sauce for a sweet-and-salty twist.’, ‘Overbaking can cause the apples to collapse; they should be tender but not mushy.’]
