A quick and easy recipe for flaky puff pastry filled with sweet strawberries and tangy cream cheese, shaped into charming hearts perfect for special occasions or a cozy treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (about 8 oz or 225 g), thawed but still cold
  • 4 oz (115 g) cream cheese, softened (full-fat recommended)
  • ½ cup fresh strawberries, sliced (or ½ cup strawberry jam)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar (optional, for icing drizzle)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (to mix with powdered sugar for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface if needed. Cut into 4 equal squares (about 4 inches each).
  4. Form heart shapes by trimming or folding the top corners of each square.
  5. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of cream cheese filling into the center of each heart, leaving a ½-inch border.
  6. Add sliced strawberries or about 1 tablespoon of strawberry jam on top of the cream cheese filling.
  7. Brush the edges and exposed cream cheese with beaten egg wash.
  8. Bake on the middle rack for 15-18 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  9. Remove from oven and transfer to a cooling rack.
  10. Optional: Mix powdered sugar and milk to make icing and drizzle over warm Danish.
  11. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold before baking to ensure puffiness. Use a sharp knife for clean heart shapes. Watch oven closely to avoid burning. For dairy-free, use vegan cream cheese and puff pastry. Frozen strawberries can be used if thawed and drained well.
