A classic diner favorite upgraded with a tangy, zesty secret sauce, combining juicy beef, gooey melted cheese, caramelized onions, and crispy rye bread for the ultimate comfort food experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter (plus more for spreading on bread)
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder in a small bowl to make the secret sauce. Mix until smooth and set aside.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper. Heat the skillet over medium-high heat and cook patties for 2-3 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Spread secret sauce on the unbuttered side of half the slices.
  5. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the sauce, followed by a cooked patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side facing up.
  6. Heat the skillet over medium heat. Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted.
  7. Cut each patty melt in half and serve immediately with your favorite sides or extra sauce for dipping.
