These heart-shaped strawberry shortcake donuts combine the nostalgic flavors of strawberry shortcake with a fun, handheld donut form, topped with a fresh strawberry glaze and whipped cream. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion.

  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • ¾ cup (180ml) buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (150g) fresh strawberries, hulled and chopped
  • 1½ cups (180g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 23 tablespoons (30-45ml) milk
  • Whipped cream (store-bought or homemade)
  • Fresh strawberry slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your heart-shaped donut pan thoroughly with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk melted and cooled butter, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Fill the donut pan cavities about ¾ full with batter using a spoon or piping bag.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  7. Cool the donuts in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While donuts bake, puree the strawberries until smooth. Mix with powdered sugar, lemon juice, and milk to make a smooth glaze.
  9. Dip the tops of cooled donuts into the strawberry glaze or spoon glaze over them. Let glaze set for about 10 minutes.
  10. Top each donut with a dollop of whipped cream and a fresh strawberry slice just before serving.

Notes

Do not overmix the batter to keep donuts tender. Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Grease the pan well to prevent sticking. If glaze thickens, stir in a splash of milk to loosen. Store donuts without whipped cream to avoid sogginess.
