A simple and festive charcuterie board featuring a homemade strawberry compote paired with savory cheeses, meats, fresh fruits, and crunchy elements, perfect for summer celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered (about 300g)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (15ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5ml) (optional)
  • Sharp white cheddar cheese
  • Soft goat cheese
  • Blue cheese or Gorgonzola (optional)
  • Sliced salami
  • Prosciutto
  • Blueberries
  • Seedless red grapes
  • Cucumber slices
  • Assorted crackers (buttery and whole grain varieties)
  • Toasted almonds or pecans
  • Honey (optional)
  • Fresh rosemary or thyme sprigs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the Strawberry Compote (about 20 minutes):
  2. 1. Place the quartered strawberries and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  3. 2. Stir occasionally as the sugar dissolves and the strawberries release their juices, about 5 minutes.
  4. 3. Add the lemon juice and reduce heat to low. Let the mixture gently simmer for 10-12 minutes until the strawberries break down but still hold some shape.
  5. 4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract (if using). Let cool to room temperature; the compote will thicken as it cools.
  6. 5. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed by adding a touch more sugar or lemon juice.
  7. Prepare the Board Ingredients (about 10-15 minutes):
  8. 1. Slice the cheddar and goat cheese into bite-sized pieces or wedges. If using blue cheese, crumble it coarsely.
  9. 2. Arrange the sliced salami and prosciutto on a plate or directly on the board, folding or rolling slices for visual interest.
  10. 3. Wash and pat dry the blueberries and grapes; keep them whole for easy picking.
  11. 4. Slice cucumbers into rounds about 1/4 inch thick.
  12. 5. Toast the nuts lightly in a dry skillet over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant. Let cool.
  13. Assemble the Charcuterie Board (about 10 minutes):
  14. 1. Place small bowls or ramekins on the board for the strawberry compote and any honey.
  15. 2. Arrange cheeses spaced evenly, leaving room for the meats and fruits.
  16. 3. Fill in gaps with clusters of blueberries, grapes, cucumber slices, and toasted nuts.
  17. 4. Fan out the crackers along the edges or in stacks for easy grabbing.
  18. 5. Garnish with fresh rosemary or thyme sprigs for a subtle herbal note and visual appeal.

Notes

Use fresh strawberries when in season for best flavor; frozen berries can be used but will yield a softer texture. Keep crackers separate until serving to avoid sogginess. The compote can be made up to 3 days ahead and refrigerated. For a gluten-free version, swap crackers for gluten-free or rice crackers. For vegetarian, omit meats and add marinated olives or grilled vegetables.
